Every Little Prison
(Deliver Me)”
Matt Maher

From wanting to be loved
From wanting to be praised by all
From needing to be first
From finding all my worth in this world
From wanting to be seen
From constant worrying about myself
Deliver me
From validating words that only seem to serve a heart that’s proud
And all my self esteem, dressed up in vanity and doubt
From wondering if I am relevant and liked, so God

Deliver me, deliver me
Show me what it all looks like
Scribbled on the pages of a human life
Riddled through the ages until we see the light
Breaking all the cages wide open
Every little prison

From fear of letting go
From fear of the unknown ahead
From being overlooked
And so misunderstood again
From fear of being judged
From rumors of a love that fails

Deliver me, deliver me
Show me what it all looks like
Scribbled on the pages of a human life
Riddled through the ages until we see the light
Breaking all the cages wide open
Every little prison

Let every man be more than I
Closer to the truth when I’m set aside
Mostly of no use, but when I fall I fly
Breaking all the cages wide open
All these little prisons
Show me what it all looks like
Scribbled on the pages of a human life
Riddled through the ages until we see the light
Breaking all the cages wide open
Every little prison

Presumptuousness is a little prison I got caught in the other day when commenting on a blog.  I totally misread the blog and I judged. Interestingly enough I did the very thing that I was commenting on. Inappropriately judging what I read. Ugh! My imperfection revealed. While I apologized it’s been on my heart and in my mind for a couple of days, actually a bit longer with something else.
A couple of weeks ago I commented on fb that “Some things are not what they seem”. They aren’t. Situations, people, events, art work, all of it are filtered through our own experience and hopefully through our faith. I’m reminded of the book Mister God This is Anna where Anna speaks of our point of view and God’s viewing points,

‘You see, everybody has got a point of view, but Mister God hasn’t. Mister God has only points to view. . .viewing points’

IMG_0838I was so happy to have my perception changed on the comment and my perception changed about the situation a couple of weeks ago. These are gifts, that I am looking forward to opening and exploring and enjoying. There is always more to the things I’m experiencing. Something deeper. Some unseen joy, pain, hurt, love, insecurity, whatever behind how we experience what we read, participate in – it is the same for the people we’re with – there’s more, something more something deeper that we need, I need to be patient with, unpresuming of and kinder with, less judging, more caring, more loving. I can LOOK at situations differently. I can step back, breathe, blink and re-read, ask better questions in other words do my very best, with God’s help, to be kinder.

Each quilt is different, each quilter brings a unique and holy experience to their quilt making. Each quilt and quilter has a story that is worth being told, listened to, understood.  This story adds to the richness and depth of quilt making. I love that quilt making runs the gamut from a household usable good, to primitive to high art with such a broad range in between that quilt making will remain around for ever, forever useful and forever offering new possibilities. I have no doubt that quilt making will be forever contentious and unfair judgements will continue to flow – even from my mouth. Lord  help me. (A side note – there is a significant difference between “like” and “judge” and that discussion is for another day.)

Deliver me, I pray.

God bless!

Teri
