Next week begins a six week study of Elizabeth Scalia’s Strange Gods Unmasking the Idols of Everday Life.
This is the second time in recent memory where I’ve reached the end of a book and wanted, no needed, more. In this case perhaps the more of it is living out what’s in the reading of the book.
Elizabeth’s writing style is relatable, thoughtful, offering the type of I’m in this with you Faith that points to and leads, if we’re willing to go, to the Father. While the copyright is 2013 the content is not only relatable but keenly aware of how politics, words, ideas etc can become idols in our life.
Elizabeth shares the experience of saying, “I’ll never miss _______” this for the writing of this book, until she did, including prayer time, family, and Mass. If this isn’t the call to honor God with my time I’m not entirely sure what is. This does mean making choices, even under hard deadlines to care for the people and things entrusted to our care.
In this space I’ll write reflections on each of the chapters and post each Wednesday. The Book Study itself is happening on Tuesday evenings. Here’s our schedule
May 11 – Introduction & Chapter 1
May 18 – Chapters 2 & 3
May 25 – Chpaters 4 & 5
June 1 – Chapters 6 & 7
June 8 – Chapters 8 & 9
June 15 – Chapter 10 & Conclusion
Note: Chapter 9 is long
