Frost Yourself

Thursday evening I baked cupcakes for my spiritual direction formation class. We have made it a point, for whoever is available to have dinner together before the weekend begins. It’s a time of continued fellowship and it’s always good to have a meal together. This recipe from I am Baker showed up somewhere and upon opening it the desire to present these to the other spiritual directors bubbled up to the surface. The frosting is probably the most decadent frosting I’ve ever had the distinct pleasure of making. When sharing a couple of things with another woman in formation she told me about this scene in the movie “How to Lose a guy in 10 days” where Matthew McConaughey’s character says, “Ladies, frost yourself.” This is perfect! Rather than frosting the cupcakes myself and having too little or too much, I brought them unfrosted with the intention of making this sign. One of the other women is a journal keeper with much fancier doodling skills so she wrote this. I came home with a few cupcakes and a lot of frosting.

In Matthew 22 Jesus teaches the Greatest and Second Commandment:

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”  He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment.  The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Here we have in a few succinct words the whole of Scripture. Love God, Love Your Neighbor. Love Yourself and not necessarily in that order. Jesus often modeled self love in going off to a quiet place to pray, or took a few of the Apostles off to pray. Or Invited them to a party. There were times to get stuck in and to the work and sometimes we need rest.

Thursday I did a little self care by going to the Chiropractor. In January I nearly fell down an incline, and as January progressed it became clear that this is not going to ease up on it’s own. At first I tried making an appointment with an osteopath however their make an appointment system didn’t work and I haven’t heard back from them. So I made an appointment with a chiro. With the adjustment is a 30 minute deep tissue massage. When I say my back is tight, it is t i g h t . There was immediate effect making walking easier. It’ll take a little while for everything to work itself out.

There are other “loving myself” things that are happening too. This frees me to love others more completely, wholly, fully.

May your joy be full,

Teri
